My hit song, ‘Poor Man Pikin’, reflects reality of many Nigerian families – Magek Boi

Nigerian Afro pop artiste, Olamilekan Ajibade, known as Magek Boi professionally, has explained that the idea behind his hit track, “Poor Man Pikin”, is the sad truth about many Nigerian families struggling to put food on their table.

Magek Boi represents several sides of the societal divide, both as a Nigerian and musician. Though he majors in Afro beats, his versatility enables him to easily glide across the genres of music with relative ease. He grew up in a family of seven, comprising four boys and a girl. His father is a hunter and his late mother was a teacher. His formative years were beyond difficult but his will to succeed was the game-changer.

Born on January 3, Magek Boi hails from Iresi Boluwaduro Local Government of Osun State, where he had his primary and secondary education. He bagged a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Electrical Engineering at the Federal Polytechnic Offa, Kwara State. The talented singer started music about a decade ago but officially in 2017, when he released “Spiritual Assignment”.

About seven years down the line, Magek Boi is arguably one of the most sought-after Nigerian artistes. His unique vocal in “Poor Man Pikin”, the sequence in his lyrics and the message literally puts it at the top of the chart. It is a song most Nigerian families will relate with, regardless of how highly they might have risen from lowly beginnings. Having been there himself, Magek Boi said the jam also mirrors citizens who are suffocating in the current economic climate in the country.

“Poor Man Pikin has so many things as inspiration but first, it’s GOD Almighty that inspired me to look around the society and my immediate community, I must say, great numbers of families can’t even afford 3 square meals, even on a more serious note, poverty is a Menace in our homes, those that have defeated poverty, the likes of Obi Cubana and co, all got not-well-to-do family background. So, reminding myself of my background and reminding others with similar story, not to forget who they are and where they’re from, I had to sing about it and that’s the birth of ‘Poor Man Pikin’.

“I will say it’s my background story off course and also poor people in general, you’ll recollect I made mentioned of my father been a hunter and my late mother been a teacher, just pause for a moment and imagine homes with similar story as mine, don’t they deserved to be heard? They do! And that’s why I have taken it upon myself to not act as if I don’t know, that poverty is a bastard, even though the Lord has helped me already”, he said.

Magek Boi has often felt like being on a lonely and dark road, with no light at the end of the tunnel in his career. However, he referenced the passion behind the craft as the compelling force that has kept him going. Initially known as “Plus One”, God sent an angel to him, in the strength of Warri Pikin, who he said has been of immense help and influence in his career.

“Talking about realness and genuineness, Real Warri Pikin is a one in a million, She’s kind-hearted and passionate about uplifting people in anyway she can, I think she was connected to the passion behind the song “Poor Man Pikin” bcos she can relate and she’s not a pretender. In terms of help, I can’t literally list the help I have gotten from her bcos it’s numerous and time will not permit me, but I can say she has done everything for me, financially, physically, even prayer bcos I remembered the first day we met for first shoot, after the shooting she held my hands, pray with me and I was lifted. I pray the Lord keep blessing her and protect her family, she’s a kind of human we need in the society”, Magek Boi disclosed.

With “Poor Man Pikin” being a hit, Magek Boi now feels a strong sense of better days ahead. The talented artiste assures his fans top bangers will follow soon, recalling his performance at the 2024 International Youth Day in his home state.

He said: “Yes of course, it’s a hit and I feel elated, motivated and gingered to do more. Recently at INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY celebration with Ministry of Youth Affairs in Osun State, where I was invited as a guest artiste, I performed two of my unmixed, unreleased songs and I can bet it with you that I’ve got more hits in my archive already, big shout-out to my Producer, Yungprobeatz Aka Insannnne Producer.”
