IGP mourns as five policemen die in road crash while returning from Edo election duty
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has mourned five officers who lost their lives in a road accident while returning from election duty to Edo State.
Abdullahi Kiyawa, Spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, confirmed on Tuesday, the death of five officers in a road accident at Karfi town in Kura Local Government Area of the state.
Kigawa said 11 police officers sustained injuries in a crash that occurred at Karfi village, adding that it happened while they were returning to Kano from an official assignment.
In a statement on Wednesday, Muyiwa Adejobi, the force spokesperson, said the IGP commiserated with the Kano police command and families of the deceased.
“The Inspector-General of Police commiserates with the Kano State Command, families and friends of the five (5) policemen who lost their lives in a ghastly motor accident on Tuesday at Karfi village in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State, along Zaria-Kano Expressway, while returning to Kano after the Edo State election duties,” the statement reads.
“The IGP prays for the repose of their souls.”
Speaking further, the police boss lauded the professionalism of the police and other security agencies for maintaining order during the election.
The IGP directed tactical teams and intelligence units to remain in the state to pending further directives.
The force spokesperson said persons arrested for electoral offences will face prosecution by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He added that those arrested for other criminal offences will be arraigned in court upon completion of investigations.
