Shorunmu says Uzoho, not Okoye is Eagles first choice goalie
The war of the goalkeepers is brewing in the Super Eagles as goalkeeper trainer, Ike Shorunmu has said that Omonia Nicosia safehands Francis Uzoho is the first choice keeper of the three-time African champions.
Uzoho has been in a direct confrontation with Maduka Okoye for the coveted top gloves of the Eagles, with the former Sparta Rotterdam star being favoured when Franco-German trainer Gernot Rohr was in charge.
Maduka Okoye was in goal for Nigeria during the 2021 Afcon and 2022 World Cup qualifiers and was also the shot-stopper at the last AFCON hosted by Cameroon.
But in recent times, Uzoho has tipped the tape ahead of Okoye, with Portuguese gaffer Jose Peseiro opting for the Cyprus based Uzoho to stand in between the sticks for the Super Eagles.
And speaking in a monitored interview, goalkeeper trainer, Ike Shorunmu insisted that Uzoho will continue to enjoy his numero uno status in the Nigerian senior national soccer side.
”Uzoho will remain the first-choice goalkeeper till a better keeper is discovered from the NPFL or any other league”., said Shorunmu, a former Eagles goalkeeper.
