Tension rise in Kano as security operatives barricade Emir Sanusi’s palace
Kano Township was thrown into palpable tension on Friday after security operatives barricaded the palace of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The road leading to the emir’s palace was also cordoned off.
According to TheCable, spokesperson of the Kano Police Command, Haruna Abdullahi, hung up when it contacted him on the development.
The newspaper said it understands that Emir Sanusi is billed to accompany Munir Sanusi, the newly-appointed Wamban Kano, to his official district in Bichi.
The emir also has a scheduled meeting with some economists on President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills.
Kano has been enmeshed in an emirship tussle since Sanusi was reinstated in May.
Sanusi was turbaned as the 14th Emir of Kano in 2014, during the Rabiu Kwankwaso administration, following the death of Ado Bayero.
However, he was dethroned in 2020 by Abdullahi Ganduje, Kwankwaso’s successor, over alleged insubordination.
Aminu Bayero was installed as Sanusi’s replacement, with the Kano emirate balkanised into five.
In May, the Kano state house of assembly repealed the law used to unseat Sanusi.
Consequently, Abba Yusuf, Kano governor, announced the reinstatement of Sanusi as emir after signing the new Kano Emirate Council Law.
Subsequently, a federal high court in Kano ordered the state government not to enforce the Emirate Council Repeal Law 2024.
On May 25, Bayero made a return to the Nassarawa palace in the city. The Kano governor subsequently ordered for his arrest.
A detachment of soldiers have however been keeping watch over Bayero.
