The former governor of Kaduna, Nasir el-Rufai; Hamza Al-Mustapha, the ex-aide to the late Sani Abacha, and other politicians have met in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to “strategise ahead of the 2027 elections.”
The meeting, which was convened by Shehu Gabam, the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (PDP), was held at the party’s headquarters on Tuesday.
Segun Showunmi, a former spokesperson of the Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organisation and member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and many other politicians attended the meeting.
In a post on Facebook, Showunmi said the meeting reviewed the state of opposition politics in the country and discussed ways to solidify it.
“Ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections, a key meeting was held by His Excellency Shehu Gabam, Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), with political figures including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, and
Segun Showunmi, known as The Alternative,” the post reads.
“The meeting aimed to review the current state of opposition politics and find ways to strengthen it for the upcoming elections.”
In a separate post on X, Showunmi described the gathering as a “strategic meeting” to “meet and greet and review the state of opposition democratic engagement in Nigeria”.
The development comes days after el-Rufai denied planning to defect from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Since 2023, there have been speculations that el-Rufai, an APC chieftain, has been working to pitch his political tent elsewhere.
The rumours gained traction after el-Rufai could not scale through the ministerial screening hurdle.
