Australian footballer Cristian Volpato is being investigated after allegedly testing positive for cocaine during a roadside drug screening following two separate speeding incidents in Sydney.

According to the New South Wales Police, the 22-year-old midfielder was first pulled over on the Anzac Bridge at about 11:05 p.m. on Thursday after he was allegedly clocked travelling between 86km/h and 94km/h in a 60km/h speed zone.

Police said Volpato underwent a roadside breath test during the first stop, which returned a negative result.

Second Stop Leads to Alleged Positive Drug Test

Authorities said the footballer was stopped again roughly two hours later after he was allegedly caught driving at 109km/h in the same 60km/h zone.

During the second traffic stop, Volpato allegedly returned a positive roadside oral fluid test for cocaine, according to a report by BBC Sport on Friday.

Following the incident, police issued him a speeding infringement notice and suspended his international driver’s licence for six months, barring him from driving anywhere in New South Wales.

Laboratory Analysis Ongoing

Police confirmed that a secondary oral fluid sample has been collected for laboratory testing to verify the initial roadside result.

Investigations into the incident remain ongoing pending the outcome of the laboratory analysis.

Football Authorities Yet to Respond

Volpato recently represented Australia at the FIFA World Cup after switching his international allegiance from Italyearlier this year.

The midfielder currently plays for Italian Serie A club Sassuolo.

Both Football Australia and Sassuolo have been approached for comment, but neither had responded as of the time of filing this report.
