The Delta State Police Command has arrested 81 suspected criminals during a coordinated intelligence-led operation aimed at tackling crime across identified flashpoints in Asaba, the state capital.

The operation, carried out on July 24, 2026, forms part of the command’s ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks, combat drug-related offences and enhance public safety through proactive policing.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed the development, noting that the exercise was led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Department of Operations, with support from the command’s tactical teams.

Suspects Arrested for Drug Offences, Illegal Checkpoint

According to Edafe, operatives acted on credible intelligence before raiding several identified criminal hideouts across the Asaba metropolis.

The operation resulted in the arrest of 81 suspects, made up of 50 men and 31 women.

The suspects were apprehended over offences including the sale and possession of suspected illicit drugs and the operation of an illegal checkpoint at the Asaba-Onitsha Head Bridge, a major route linking Delta and Anambra states.

Drugs, Vehicles Recovered During Raid

Police said large quantities of Tramadol and substances suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered during the operation, describing the seizure as part of efforts to dismantle drug distribution networks believed to be linked to other criminal activities.

The enforcement exercise also led to the impoundment of five vehicles allegedly connected to various offences, including the operation of an unauthorised taxi park at Pinnacle Junction along Okpanam Road and activities facilitating the sale and distribution of suspected illicit drugs in the area.

Edafe said the suspects and all recovered exhibits remain in police custody as investigations continue.

He added that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Commissioner Reaffirms Commitment to Crime Prevention

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and proactive crime prevention to safeguard lives and property across the state.

He also warned those involved in criminal activities, particularly illicit drug trafficking, the operation of illegal checkpoints and other unlawful acts, to desist or face the full weight of the law.
