AI and Autonomous Weapons Will Transform the Future of Warfare, Says Anduril CEO

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the way wars are planned and fought, and according to the CEO of Anduril Industries, the shift has only just begun. Speaking with CNBC, the company’s chief executive argued that AI-powered systems and autonomous technologies will become central to modern military operations, fundamentally changing how nations defend themselves and respond to global threats.
The CEO explained that warfare is moving away from relying primarily on expensive, crewed military equipment toward networks of intelligent, autonomous systems capable of operating with minimal human intervention. These systems include drones, surveillance platforms, robotic vehicles, and AI software that can process vast amounts of battlefield information in real time. Rather than replacing human decision-makers entirely, the goal is to allow military personnel to make faster and more informed decisions using AI as a force multiplier.
According to the executive, recent conflicts around the world have already demonstrated how autonomous technologies are reshaping combat. Low-cost drones equipped with advanced sensors and AI have proven capable of carrying out reconnaissance missions, identifying targets, and supporting military operations at a fraction of the cost of traditional equipment. These technologies are changing long-held assumptions about the types of weapons that provide strategic advantages.
He noted that countries investing heavily in AI and autonomous defence systems are likely to gain significant military advantages in the coming years. Instead of focusing only on building larger fleets of aircraft, tanks, or warships, future defence strategies will increasingly depend on intelligent software that can coordinate thousands of autonomous assets simultaneously.
The CEO also stressed that speed is becoming one of the most valuable assets in defence. AI can analyse data from satellites, sensors, radar systems, and drones within seconds, allowing commanders to respond much faster than would be possible through traditional methods. Faster analysis means quicker decisions, which can significantly influence the outcome of military operations.
Another major point raised during the discussion was manufacturing. The executive argued that defence companies need to produce autonomous systems at much greater scale and lower cost than conventional weapons. Modern conflicts can rapidly consume military equipment, making the ability to manufacture large numbers of AI-enabled systems an increasingly important strategic advantage.
Anduril has positioned itself differently from traditional defence contractors by developing software-driven military technologies alongside autonomous hardware. The company’s products are designed to integrate AI into surveillance, border security, unmanned aircraft, and command-and-control systems, with the objective of improving operational efficiency while reducing reliance on large numbers of personnel.
The interview also touched on growing global competition in military AI. Governments around the world are increasing investments in artificial intelligence, viewing it as a technology that could shape the future balance of power. As a result, defence spending is increasingly being directed toward AI research, autonomous systems, and advanced software rather than solely toward conventional military platforms.
While enthusiasm for AI in defence continues to grow, the technology also raises important ethical and regulatory questions. Experts have warned that greater autonomy in military systems requires robust oversight, clear rules of engagement, and strong safeguards to ensure that human operators remain accountable for critical decisions. Discussions about international standards for military AI are expected to become increasingly important as these technologies mature.
Looking ahead, the Anduril CEO believes the defence industry is entering one of its biggest technological transitions in decades. Just as previous eras of warfare were transformed by aircraft, radar, and precision-guided weapons, the next generation of military capability will be defined by artificial intelligence, autonomous platforms, and software-driven operations.
