Gunmen have killed a former councillor, Daniel Danjuma Chong, popularly known as “Hon. Star,” during a late-night attack on Torok Village in Rim Community, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State. The incident occurred at about 11:45 p.m. on Sunday, throwing residents into panic as sustained gunfire forced many people to flee their homes in search of safety.

Residents said the attackers opened fire indiscriminately before fleeing the area. While Chong died from gunshot wounds, another resident, David Danjuma, was injured in the assault and is receiving medical treatment. Community members described the attack as another tragic episode in the recurring violence affecting parts of Riyom, calling for stronger security measures to protect vulnerable communities.

The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) condemned the killing, describing it as an unacceptable attack on innocent residents. In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, the group extended condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victim a speedy recovery. It also urged security agencies and the Plateau State Government to launch an immediate manhunt for those responsible and dismantle criminal hideouts allegedly operating in the area.

As of the latest reports, the Plateau State Police Command had yet to officially confirm the incident, as efforts to reach the command’s spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful. The latest attack has renewed concerns over persistent insecurity in Plateau communities, with residents urging authorities to intensify surveillance and ensure those behind the killing are brought to justice.
