NAFDAC Uncovers Lagos Warehouse Repackaging Suspected Fake Viagra, Other Medicines
Officials warn counterfeit drugs could endanger lives as investigation widens
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a warehouse in Lagos allegedly used to repackage suspected counterfeit medicines, including products branded as Viagra, Omeprazoleand other pharmaceuticals. The discovery was made during an enforcement operation targeting illegal drug activities, with officials describing the facility as a major threat to public health.
According to NAFDAC, operatives found large quantities of empty drug containers, counterfeit packaging materials, labels and suspected fake medicines inside the warehouse. The agency said the items were allegedly being repackaged to resemble genuine products before being distributed to unsuspecting consumers through the pharmaceutical supply chain.
NAFDAC officials warned that counterfeit medicines can fail to treat illnesses and may expose patients to severe health complications or death. The agency said the operation forms part of its ongoing campaign against fake and substandard drugs, stressing that those behind the illegal business prioritize profit over human lives. Authorities also urged Nigerians to buy medicines only from licensed pharmacies and to avoid suspiciously cheap products.
The seized products have been taken into custody as investigations continue to identify everyone linked to the operation. NAFDAC said those found culpable will face prosecution in line with the law, while reaffirming its commitment to dismantling counterfeit drug networks and protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s healthcare system.
