Google Reportedly Nears $1.5 Billion AI Deal With Mechanize to Strengthen Coding Models
Search giant is reportedly negotiating a talent-and-technology licensing agreement with AI startup Mechanize as competition in AI coding intensifies.

Google is reportedly in advanced discussions on a deal worth more than $1.5 billion with San Francisco-based AI startup Mechanize, as the company looks to strengthen its position in the rapidly evolving AI coding market. Rather than acquiring the startup outright, Google is expected to pursue a hybrid arrangement that would allow it to license Mechanize’s technology while hiring key engineers and researchers from the company. The structure mirrors Google’s recent strategy of securing top AI talent without triggering the lengthy regulatory scrutiny associated with full acquisitions.
Mechanize specializes in building virtual software engineering environments that help train and evaluate AI coding agents on realistic programming tasks. Its technology enables AI models to tackle complex, multi-step software development challenges instead of relying on simple coding benchmarks. Google reportedly sees these capabilities as an important asset as it works to improve the coding performance of its Gemini AI models and compete more aggressively with rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic, whose coding assistants have gained significant traction among developers.
The startup has attracted considerable attention despite its short history. Founded in 2025 by former Epoch AI co-founder Tamay Besiroglu, Mechanize raised $9.1 million in seed funding earlier this year at a valuation of approximately $500 million. If the reported agreement is finalized, it would represent a remarkable leap in value in just a few months and underscore the premium that major technology companies are willing to pay for cutting-edge AI talent and infrastructure.
The proposed transaction also reflects a broader trend across the AI industry. Instead of purchasing startups outright, companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have increasingly opted for licensing agreements combined with strategic hiring. These deals allow large technology firms to rapidly strengthen their AI capabilities while avoiding many of the regulatory hurdles that accompany traditional acquisitions. Google previously used a similar approach with companies including Character AI and Windsurf, making the Mechanize negotiations another example of this evolving strategy.
If completed, the deal would reinforce Google’s commitment to remaining competitive in one of AI’s fastest-growing sectors: software development. AI-powered coding assistants are becoming an increasingly important battleground as developers seek tools that can write, debug, and optimize code more efficiently. By integrating Mechanize’s technology and expertise, Google aims to accelerate improvements to its AI coding platforms while strengthening its long-term position in the race to build the next generation of intelligent software engineering tools.
