Alibaba’s Qwen AI Models Surpass 3 Billion Downloads
Alibaba says its open-weight Qwen models have reached more than 3 billion cumulative downloads in just six months, highlighting the growing global influence of Chinese open AI.

Alibaba’s Qwen family of artificial-intelligence models has crossed a major milestone, surpassing 3 billion cumulative downloads. The figure covers more than 460 open-weight models released by Alibaba and represents a dramatic increase in adoption over a relatively short period. The milestone demonstrates how quickly Qwen has expanded beyond Alibaba’s own ecosystem and into the wider global AI-development community.
The Qwen ecosystem has also grown through thousands of models derived from Alibaba’s releases. According to the reported figures, developers have created more than 300,000 derivative models, allowing Qwen technology to be adapted for different applications and specialized tasks. This open-weight approach gives developers greater freedom to modify and deploy models for their own needs, helping explain the rapid expansion of the ecosystem.
The milestone comes shortly after Alibaba released its latest Qwen3.8 generation. The company’s flagship Qwen3.8-Max contains 2.4 trillion parameters, while the Qwen3.8-27B provides a significantly smaller option aimed at practical deployment. The latest releases emphasize coding, productivity and AI-agent capabilities, showing Alibaba’s ambition to compete with leading models from both China and the United States.
Qwen’s growth is particularly significant because open-weight AI has become a major battleground in the global technology race. Chinese companies including Alibaba, DeepSeek and Z.ai are increasingly releasing models that developers can download, adapt and deploy themselves. This strategy contrasts with many proprietary AI systems, where access is primarily provided through controlled applications or APIs. The growing Qwen ecosystem suggests that openness can be a powerful distribution strategy for AI developers.
The 3-billion-download milestone therefore represents more than a headline number—it signals the emergence of Qwen as one of the largest foundations of the open AI ecosystem. With hundreds of models, hundreds of thousands of derivatives and rapidly expanding developer adoption, Alibaba is positioning Qwen as a global platform rather than simply another AI chatbot. If this growth continues, Qwen could play an increasingly important role in shaping the next generation of open artificial intelligence.
