Troops of the 162 Amphibious Battalion under Operation Hadin Kai have repelled an attempted attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on the Forward Operating Base Mandaragirau in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State. The assault began at about 2 a.m. on Aug. 15, 2026, with the terrorists attacking the military position from two directions.

According to the Joint Task Force, troops detected the advancing fighters through early-warning and surveillance systems before engaging them. One group was stopped during a heavy exchange of fire, while another group attempting to bypass the troops and enter the camp was also repelled by superior firepower. The attackers eventually withdrew, prompting troops to pursue them along their retreat routes.

Acting Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai, Capt. Mohammed Goni, said several ISWAP fighters were neutralised during the confrontation. Troops recovered AK-47 rifles with loaded magazines, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher with bombs and chargers, a camcorder and other combat equipment. Surveillance footage also showed the terrorists dragging away the bodies of some of their colleagues toward the Timbuktu Triangle.

Goni said no military personnel was killed in the operation, describing the outcome as a demonstration of the troops’ readiness and operational effectiveness. The Theatre Command commended the 162 Amphibious Battalion for its response and said Operation Hadin Kai remains committed to restricting terrorists’ freedom of action and restoring peace and security across the Northeast.
