The Plateau State Police Command has detained a police officer accused of shooting an unarmed trader, identified as Danladi, in the leg at a checkpoint in Riyom Local Government Area. The incident occurred on Aug. 11, 2026, after the trader, who transports goods in a van, was stopped while conveying vegetables to the Southeast.

Police Public Relations Officer Superintendent Alfred Alabo said the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Riyom Division responded after receiving information about the incident, disarmed the officer and took him to the State Criminal Investigation Department. The officer is currently being questioned and undergoing disciplinary proceedings.

Alabo said the Commissioner of Police directed the DPO to visit the hospital where Danladi is receiving treatment and report on his condition. He added that the investigation remains ongoing and assured the public that appropriate disciplinary measures are being taken against the officer.

The police spokesman urged motorists and other road users to avoid confrontations with armed personnel during disputes and instead use established complaint channels, including the Police Public Relations Office and Police Complaint Response Unit. He said the officers involved were not originally from the Plateau Command but were in the state to perform duties under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police.
