The Enugu State Police Command has rescued three people abducted during a carjacking incident in Independence Layout, Enugu. The victims were freed after operatives of the Anti-Cultism Sub-Unit of the Violent Crime Response Unit, supported by the Neighbourhood Watch Group and community members, launched a pursuit of the suspected attackers. 

The police said the operation followed credible intelligence received at about 1:30 a.m. on August 18, 2026, while officers were conducting crime-prevention patrols along the Port Harcourt Expressway. The suspects had reportedly carjacked a Lexus RX350 and abducted its occupants before fleeing with the victims.

The ensuing pursuit led security operatives to Hillview Road in Independence Layout, where the suspects abandoned the vehicle and escaped. The three victims were subsequently rescued unharmed and taken to safety with assistance from neighbourhood watch members and residents.

Police recovered the Lexus RX350, a locally fabricated Beretta-like pistol loaded with five rounds of 9mm ammunition, a locally made cut-to-size firearm, one live cartridge, gloves, a ski mask and a mobile phone. The command has intensified investigations and launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects, while Commissioner of Police Mamman Bitrus Giwa commended the operatives and residents who assisted in the rescue.
