Nvidia Ships First H200 AI Chips to China

Nvidia has confirmed that its H200 AI processors have begun reaching Chinese customers under a new U.S. licensing framework, reopening a major market after months of restrictions.

Nvidia has confirmed that its first shipments of H200 artificial-intelligence processors have reached China, marking an important development in the ongoing U.S.-China technology competition. The shipments follow months of restrictions and regulatory uncertainty surrounding Nvidia’s ability to sell advanced AI hardware to Chinese companies.

The H200 is one of Nvidia’s most powerful previous-generation AI accelerators and is widely used for training and running large AI models. Earlier reports indicated that ByteDance and Tencent each received approximately 10,000 H200 processors, while other Chinese technology companies could receive shipments after obtaining individual approvals.

The shipments are significant because Nvidia’s position in China’s AI market has deteriorated sharply since export restrictions were introduced. Although the U.S. government authorized selected Chinese companies to purchase H200 systems, Chinese regulators have also maintained their own approval requirements. Nvidia has previously acknowledged that its share of China’s advanced AI-chip market had fallen dramatically as domestic competitors such as Huawei expanded.

Despite the renewed shipments, Nvidia is not yet counting on China for major near-term data-center revenue. In its latest outlook, the company said its forecast assumes no data-center computing revenue from China for the coming quarter. That illustrates how uncertain the market remains even after H200 deliveries have restarted.

The development nevertheless gives Nvidia another opportunity to compete in one of the world’s largest AI markets. At the same time, Chinese companies are accelerating development of domestic processors in an effort to reduce reliance on American technology. The H200 shipments therefore represent more than a commercial transaction—they are another important development in the global race for AI computing power and semiconductor independence.
