Anthropic Unveils Standard for AI Agents to Control Physical Devices
The new Model Hardware Standard could allow AI agents to operate laboratory equipment, robots and manufacturing machines through a shared and safety-focused interface.
Anthropic has introduced a research preview of the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a new framework designed to help AI agents interact with and operate physical devices. The standard aims to create a common interface that would allow AI systems to communicate with equipment ranging from microscopes and liquid-handling machines to robotic arms and advanced manufacturing tools.
The project represents an important step in moving AI agents beyond purely digital tasks. Instead of simply analyzing information or generating text, an AI agent using the Model Hardware Standard could potentially coordinate multiple scientific instruments and carry out complex workflows. Anthropic says possible applications include drug-discovery experiments and laser calibration on quantum computers.
A key goal of MHS is interoperability. Today, connecting AI systems to specialized hardware often requires custom software for each device. Anthropic’s proposed standard could simplify this process by giving manufacturers a shared way to describe how their equipment works, including operational parameters and safety limits.
