Airtel Launches Africa’s First Commercial Starlink Mobile Service
Airtel Africa and SpaceX have launched satellite-to-mobile connectivity in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, allowing compatible phones to connect directly to Starlink satellites without specialized equipment.

Airtel Africa and SpaceX have launched Starlink Mobile commercially in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), marking the first commercial deployment of the satellite-to-mobile service in Africa. The service is designed to extend connectivity to areas where traditional mobile infrastructure is limited or unavailable.
The technology allows compatible smartphones to connect directly to Starlink satellites when users have a clear view of the sky. Customers do not need a separate satellite dish or specialized Starlink terminal, making the service potentially useful in remote and underserved areas. The initial service supports lightweight data applications, including messaging, alongside SMS.
The launch follows Airtel Africa’s strategic partnership with SpaceX announced in December 2025. The companies previously tested Starlink Mobile data and messaging services in Kenya in March 2026 before moving toward commercial deployment in the DRC. The DRC is therefore the first Airtel Africa market where the technology has progressed from testing to a commercial service.
The development could have significant implications for digital inclusion across Africa. Airtel Africa operates across 14 markets and already provides 4G services across all of them, while 5G is available in five markets. The company says it is continuing to expand its networks and invest in technologies that can improve connectivity, particularly in underserved communities.
The Starlink partnership represents a new approach to extending mobile coverage beyond traditional cell towers and fibre networks. If the service expands successfully across additional African markets, satellite-to-mobile connectivity could help reduce coverage gaps and provide basic digital services in locations that are difficult or expensive to reach with conventional infrastructure. For Airtel and SpaceX, the DRC launch marks an important step toward making satellite connectivity part of everyday mobile communications in Africa.
