DeepSeek Launches V4 Pro as China’s AI Race Intensifies
DeepSeek has officially released its V4 Pro model, adding stronger agentic capabilities while sharply increasing API prices as competition among Chinese and U.S. AI companies accelerates.

DeepSeek has officially launched V4 Pro, the full version of its latest flagship AI model, marking another major step in China’s rapidly developing AI industry. The model is available through DeepSeek’s website, app and API, following a months-long preview period. The company says V4 Pro delivers stronger performance in areas including coding, tool use and scientific reasoning. Independent benchmarking reported by Reuters gave V4 Pro an Intelligence Index score of 53, compared with 40 for the less expensive V4 Flash.
A major focus of V4 Pro is AI agents—systems capable of handling multi-step tasks and interacting with external tools. This reflects the industry’s broader shift away from chatbots that simply answer questions toward AI systems capable of completing longer workflows. DeepSeek is therefore positioning V4 Pro not only as a conversational model but also as a platform for developers building more autonomous applications.
The launch also marks a significant change in DeepSeek’s pricing strategy. The company plans to introduce separate peak and off-peak API pricing, with the new rates taking effect on August 17, 2026. Depending on the model and type of token, prices will increase by between 50% and 1,100%. V4 Pro will cost substantially more than V4 Flash, although DeepSeek’s pricing remains competitive compared with some major international AI models.
DeepSeek is making this move while facing stronger competition from Chinese companies such as Moonshot AI, ByteDance and Alibaba, as well as major U.S. AI developers. The company is expanding its workforce, raising additional capital and reportedly developing its own AI chips in an effort to reduce dependence on external hardware suppliers. The growing competition is also pushing AI companies to focus heavily on efficiency and cost per task.
The V4 Pro release shows how quickly the global AI landscape is changing. DeepSeek’s strategy is evolving from simply offering inexpensive models toward competing on reasoning, coding, AI agents and large-scale infrastructure. With Chinese and U.S. companies racing to deliver increasingly capable systems at competitive prices, the next phase of the AI competition may depend as much on efficiency and affordability as on raw model intelligence.
