Students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, Ogun State, staged a protest on Monday following the death of one of their colleagues during a suspected armed robbery attack, demanding justice for the victim and stronger security measures in communities surrounding the institution. 

The demonstration drew students from different departments, who marched through the campus and nearby roads carrying placards while urging the Ogun State Government, security agencies and the institution’s management to address the recurring security threats affecting students living off campus.

Students Decry Rising Insecurity

The protesters described the killing as another tragic consequence of worsening insecurity around the polytechnic, arguing that repeated attacks on students have created fear among residents of the institution’s host communities.

They called for a thorough investigation into the incident and the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the attack. The students also urged authorities to implement lasting security measures to prevent similar incidents.

Polytechnic Postpones Examinations

In response to the incident, the management of Gateway ICT Polytechnic announced the postponement of examinations scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, and Wednesday, July 29.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the Timetable, Examination and Academic Calendar Committee, Gideon Adekunle, the institution said the decision was taken to honour the deceased student and allow affected students to recover emotionally from the incident.

According to the statement, examinations will resume on Friday, July 30, while a revised timetable for the postponed papers will be released later.

Union Demands Lasting Security Measures

The Students’ Union Government President, Comrade Owoigbe Blessing, described the incident as deeply disturbing and renewed calls for improved security around student hostels and neighbouring communities.

Student leaders urged security agencies to increase patrols, strengthen surveillance and work with community stakeholders to tackle armed robbery and other criminal activities threatening students’ safety.

Renewed Focus on Student Safety

The latest protest comes amid growing concerns over insecurity affecting tertiary institutions in Ogun State. In recent months, Gateway ICT Polytechnic has convened security meetings involving law enforcement agencies, traditional rulers, government officials and community leaders to address cases of robbery, kidnapping and other crimes targeting students.

Students maintained that while previous engagements were encouraging, more practical measures are needed to ensure that those responsible for attacks are brought to justice and that learners can pursue their studies without fear.
