Osun Police Recover Snatched Rifle, Arrest Four Suspects
Police in Osun State say an AK-47 rifle allegedly taken during an attack on officers in Ikire has been recovered, while four suspects have been arrested.
The Osun State Police Command has recovered an AK-47 rifle that was allegedly snatched from police officers during a violent incident at the Naira and Kobo Park in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area. The incident reportedly occurred on Monday when a group of suspected political thugs attacked a police rescue team.
Police Commissioner Ibrahim Zungura announced the recovery while parading four suspects identified as Sikiru Ademola Adedeji, Olalere Taiwo, Olalere Ademola and Bankole Abiodun. According to the police, preliminary questioning linked the suspects to a faction allegedly headed by a man identified as Ayewo.
Authorities said the earlier confrontation resulted in two deaths and injuries to police officers. Investigators allege that the recovered rifle was subsequently used by one of the suspects’ alleged associates during the incident. Police have launched a search for Ayewo and other people believed to have fled the area.
One of the arrested suspects, Sikiru Adedeji, gave investigators an account of the events and alleged that a political figure known as “Senator Akogun Lere” was the group’s boss. This is an allegation made by a suspect and has not, by itself, established the politician’s involvement in the incident.
The police command said investigations are continuing and that anyone found responsible will face legal proceedings. The recovery of the firearm is expected to assist investigators as they work to establish what happened during the confrontation and identify all those involved.
