Paystack launches Zap, enters Nigeria’s consumer payments market with new banking app
LAGOS, Nigeria — Nigerian fintech company Paystack has officially entered the consumer payments market with the launch of Zap, a new mobile application designed to make bank transfers faster, simpler and more reliable for everyday users.

The launch marks a significant shift for Paystack, which has built its reputation over the past decade by providing payment infrastructure for businesses across Africa. With Zap, the company is now targeting individual consumers, expanding beyond merchant payment processing into the highly competitive digital banking and peer-to-peer payments space.
According to Paystack, Zap enables users to link multiple Nigerian bank accounts within a single app, eliminating the need to switch between different banking applications when sending money. The company says the app is designed to streamline transfers while offering the speed and reliability that have become central to its business payment services.
One of Zap’s biggest selling points is transaction speed. Paystack says bank transfers initiated through the app are completed within 30 seconds, while 98% of transactions are confirmed in less than 10 seconds. The company believes this performance will reduce delays that many Nigerians experience when moving money between different banks.
The fintech firm explained that Zap is powered by the same technology infrastructure that supports thousands of businesses using Paystack’s payment platform. By leveraging this infrastructure, the company aims to deliver a consumer payment experience that is both fast and dependable.
The launch also reflects the growing demand for digital financial services in Nigeria, where millions of consumers increasingly rely on mobile banking applications for everyday transactions such as sending money to family and friends, paying bills and making purchases.
Paystack said its investment in infrastructure has enabled it to maintain high levels of system reliability. During the last quarter of 2024, the company’s platform processed more than three billion API requests while achieving 99.9927% uptime, equivalent to only about 9.5 minutes of downtime over the three-month period.
The company also reported major improvements in system performance, reducing its average response time from 446 milliseconds to 254 milliseconds. According to Paystack, these improvements have helped make transactions faster and have strengthened the reliability of its payment services.
Zap enters a market that already includes several established digital banking and payment platforms competing to attract Nigerian consumers. Rather than operating as a traditional bank, Paystack is positioning the app as a simple, high-performance tool focused on seamless bank transfers and money management across multiple accounts.
The application is available for download on both Android and iOS, allowing users to connect their existing bank accounts and begin making transfers through a single interface.
Beyond Nigeria, Paystack continues to expand its presence across Africa, with operations in countries including Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. The company says it will continue investing in payment infrastructure while developing new products for both businesses and consumers.
Industry observers say the introduction of Zap represents an important milestone for Paystack as it broadens its product portfolio beyond merchant services. The move also intensifies competition in Nigeria’s rapidly evolving fintech sector, where companies are racing to provide faster, more reliable and more convenient digital financial services.
With Zap, Paystack is betting that the technology and reliability that helped it become one of Africa’s leading payment companies can also win over millions of everyday consumers looking for a quicker and more seamless way to manage their money.
