Stripe Acquires AI Routing Startup OpenRouter in $8 Billion Deal

Stripe is expanding deeper into AI infrastructure with its acquisition of OpenRouter, an AI marketplace that lets developers access and switch between hundreds of models through a single platform.

Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter, an AI model-routing and marketplace startup, in a deal valued at more than $8 billion, according to reports. The acquisition represents one of Stripe’s largest-ever corporate moves and expands the payments company’s ambitions beyond financial infrastructure and deeper into the rapidly growing AI economy. The exact purchase price was not disclosed by Stripe.

OpenRouter provides developers and businesses with a single interface for accessing hundreds of different AI models. Instead of building separate integrations with companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic and other model providers, developers can use OpenRouter to compare models and route requests between them. The platform has grown rapidly, reportedly serving more than 10 million users and processing over 10 trillion tokens per day.

The acquisition makes strategic sense for Stripe because AI companies increasingly need sophisticated systems for tracking and paying for model usage. Different AI models have different prices, capabilities and performance levels, meaning businesses can potentially reduce costs by sending each request to the model best suited for a particular task. OpenRouter effectively operates as an infrastructure layer between AI applications and model providers, making AI consumption easier to manage.

Stripe has already been building aggressively in this area. The company acquired Metronome, a usage-based billing platform, earlier in 2026 and has introduced tools that allow AI businesses to monitor token consumption and charge customers based on AI usage. Bringing OpenRouter into the company could connect model selection, routing, usage tracking and billing into a broader infrastructure platform for AI businesses.

The deal also demonstrates how valuable the AI infrastructure layer has become. OpenRouter was reportedly valued at only about $1.3 billion in May 2026, meaning the acquisition represents a dramatic increase in its valuation within just a few months. For Stripe, the investment reflects a bet that AI will generate an enormous new category of software and economic activity—and that controlling the infrastructure through which companies select, consume and pay for AI models could become as strategically important as payment processing itself.
