The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed three alcohol manufacturing companies in Ogun State for allegedly continuing the production of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and small PET bottles despite the Federal Government’s ban on the products.

The enforcement exercise was carried out in Ota and formed part of NAFDAC’s ongoing nationwide crackdown on manufacturers violating the prohibition on sachet alcohol and alcoholic drinks packaged in PET bottles below 200 millilitres. The operation was led by Kunke Ojo, Assistant Director of the agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate.

Factory Allegedly Removed Products Under Enforcement

NAFDAC said officials first inspected one of the affected facilities last Friday and discovered sachet alcoholic drinks being produced alongside large quantities of PET bottles.

According to the agency, the factory was initially placed under regulatory hold. However, during a follow-up inspection, officials found that the sachet alcohol products previously identified had been secretly removed from the premises.

The agency described the removal of products already under regulatory enforcement as a serious violation.

Two Other Companies Accused of Defying Ban

The enforcement team also visited a second company, where officials allegedly found ongoing production of sachet alcoholic beverages despite the existing federal prohibition. The premises were immediately sealed.

NAFDAC said a third company had earlier been inspected in January, when regulators halted 22 production machines and confiscated millions of PET bottles and sachet packaging materials intended for destruction.

During the latest operation, officials allegedly discovered that the company had broken the regulatory seals, restarted the machines and resumed manufacturing the prohibited products. The inspection also uncovered millions of additional PET bottles at the facility, prompting NAFDAC to shut down the factory.

Agency Reaffirms Zero-Tolerance Policy

Reacting to the discoveries, NAFDAC reiterated that it would continue to enforce the nationwide ban on sachet alcoholic beverages without exception.

The agency said the operation reflects its commitment to ensuring full compliance with existing regulations and protecting public health by preventing prohibited alcoholic products from reaching consumers.

Public Urged to Report Illegal Production

NAFDAC appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected production, distribution or sale of banned sachet alcoholic drinks to the nearest agency office.

The regulator maintained that intelligence provided by citizens remains vital to its efforts to eliminate prohibited products from the market and strengthen compliance across the country’s alcohol manufacturing sector.
