Lagos to reintroduce monthly environmental sanitation
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved the reintroduction of the monthly environmental sanitation.
Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, disclosed this to journalists.
Wahab stated that the State Executive Council has granted the approval. He said the sanitation which will commence this, would be officially announced by the governor soon.
“Lagos governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the state executive council have approved the re-introduction of the monthly sanitation. The governor will announce it officially for the exercise to commence this month,” Wahab, who spoke in Yoruba language, said in a 21-second clip shared on the Lagos State Environmental Update page on X.
The state government stopped the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in the state in 2015.
A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos State, presided over by Justice Mohammed Idris, has declared as unlawful the restriction of citizens’ movement during the monthly Lagos environmental sanitation exercise.
The policy of the Lagos State Government had restricted citizens to their homes for three hours between 7 a.m and 10 a.m every last Saturday of the month.
The court held that there is no law in force in Lagos State by which any citizen could be kept indoors, compulsorily. It also added that there is no regulation in force currently in Lagos State which authorises the restriction of movement of citizens, on the last Saturdays of the month, for the purpose of observing environmental sanitation.
