Fans criticise ‘confusing’ new UCL format

...call for old system to return after inaugural draw

Many fans were left baffled by the new Champions League format as they labelled it ‘confusing’. The inaugural league phase draw took place in Monaco on Thursday, with the traditional group stage being replaced.

Teams were placed in four pots according to seeding, with each club facing two teams from one pot. There are more matches for each team, with each club playing four games at home and four away. After each team was manually drawn, automated software determined their opponents.

Some fans struggled to understand the draw, with one writing:

“Wtf is this new format there was legit nothing wrong with the previous format”. Meanwhile, another wrote: “someone explain the new format to me like in 5 pls”.

In addition, another declared: “This new Champions League format is the most confusing BS I’ve ever seen”. However, there was some support for the new format, with one fan noting that there will be more high-profile matchups from the start of the competition.

They wrote: “The new #UCLdraw format is fire. There are so many classic pairings from the start. Top stuff.”
Another added: “This new format for champions league is actually good for the fans.”
