‘This award is for Nigeria, we’re a great nation — Lookman after winning CAF Best player award

Nigerian striker Ademola Lookman paid tribute to Nigeria and those who offered support to him, particularly during the challenging period of his career.

Lookman was announced as the CAF Men’s Player Of The Year on Monday, at a ceremony in Marrakech, Morocco.

The Nigerian star faced stern competition from Serhou Guirassy, who left Stuttgart for Borussia Dortmund last summer. The Guinean netted 32 goals in 32 games last season.

Paris Saint-Germain defender Ashraf Hakimi, Simon Adingra of Brighton and Ronwen Williams, goalkeeper of Mamelodi Sundowns, were the other contenders.

Despite the fierce competition, Lookman was able to stand out, thanks to his extraordinary hat-trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, which gave Atalanta a historic trophy.

The award comes as the crowning achievement of an exceptional year and that Lookman dedicated not only to himself, but also to his family, his fans and Nigeria.

“Being here and receiving this recognition is a blessing, something incredible,” said the Nigerian striker at the award ceremony,” he stated.

“I owe everything to those who supported me: the presidents, the coaches, the clubs, and above all the fans. This award is not only mine, but to all those who helped me along the way.”

The 27-year-old also delivered a message of hope to those facing doubt and challenges.
“I want to tell the children and all the people who are watching me to never give up,” he stressed.

“In four years, my world has changed: I have learned to believe in myself, to overcome my fears. This award is proof that with determination and work you can achieve incredible goals.”

Lookman concluded his speech with a special thought for Nigeria.

“This award is for Nigeria. We are a great nation and we have so much talent. We will continue to fly high,” he stated.
