Brazil legend in intensive care after domestic accident

Former Brazil and Inter defender Lucio has been kept under ‘constant observation’ in intensive care after suffering burns.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Lucio was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Brasilia hospital on May 15 with burns on various parts of his body due to a domestic accident.

Following treatment, the hospital issued a statement reassuring his fans that the Brazilian is ‘stable, conscious and under constant observation’.

Lucio started his professional career in his homeland before moving to Europe in 2001 when he joined Bayer Leverkusen. He then went on to play for Bayern Munich for five years before heading to Inter in 2009, where he won the treble under Jose Mourinho, including his only Champions League title. The 47-year-old retired from professional football in 2020.

The centre-back represented Brazil in 105 international matches, making his debut in 2000. He won the World Cup with Selecao in 2002 and also bagged the 2005 and 2009 Confederations Cup titles.
