The late Organising Secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaya, was laid to rest in Ketu, Lagos, on Tuesday as family members,
friends, colleagues, and supporters gathered to bid him farewell.
Videos circulating on social media showed hundreds of mourners paying their last respects to the union leader.
Ajiboye died after succumbing to gunshot wounds sustained when unidentified gunmen attacked his vehicle in the Fadeyi area of Lagos on Sunday evening.
The Lagos State Police Command had earlier confirmed the incident, stating that a manhunt had been launched to apprehend those responsible.
Paying tribute, the Lagos State NURTW Chairman, Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, described the deceased as a loyal ally, trusted friend, and dedicated union leader.
“The news of the sudden passing of Comrade Toba Ajiboye has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken. He was more than an ally; he was a trusted friend and a true pillar of TeamSego and SegoNation. His friendship, unwavering support and selfless dedication to the union will forever remain etched in my heart,” he said.
The burial also attracted widespread reactions on social media, where many users mourned Ajiboye’s death while others speculated about the circumstances surrounding the killing.
Reacting to a viral Instagram video from the burial, a user identified as Buchy wrote, “I don’t know why motor union people like killing themselves.”
Another user, Lolariike, commented, “Don’t be surprised if the killer is among them, crying. SMH.”
Writing in Pidgin, Oladayo said, “So sad, na so everybody go end one day.”
Another user, Crownoloniyo, added, “Don’t be surprised if the person who killed this man, or people who know what happened, are among those who came for his burial.”
On Facebook, a video from the burial captured mourners cursing those responsible for Ajiboye’s death as the crowd wept openly.
A Facebook user identified as Elegbede also commented, “The person who killed the man is among them. I know that.”
