Commissioner of Police Ojo Adekimi disclosed the development in Ilorin, describing the incident as one of the disturbing cases currently under investigation by the command. Detectives began investigating the case on July 25, 2026, after a report was lodged at the Kaiama Divisional Police Headquarters.

According to preliminary police findings, the child’s mother had left Ummaiyat in the care of a family member while she went to Kaiama Central Market. During that period, the suspect allegedly lured the child to a nearby farm settlement, where she was accused of killing her by strangulation. Police said initial investigations suggest the alleged crime was linked to jealousy stemming from a prolonged domestic dispute.

The police commissioner said the suspect was arrested shortly after the incident and remains in custody as investigators continue to gather evidence. He assured the public that the command is committed to ensuring a thorough investigation and that anyone found culpable would face prosecution in accordance with the law.

Adekimi also reiterated the command’s resolve to tackle violent crimes across Kwara State through intelligence-driven policing and community collaboration. He urged residents to promptly report suspicious activities and domestic disputes that could escalate into violence, stressing that early intervention often helps prevent tragic outcomes.

The case has generated concern within the community due to the age of the victim and the circumstances surrounding her death. Police said investigations are ongoing to establish all the facts before the matter is formally charged to court, while reassuring residents that justice will be pursued for the deceased child.
