Benue South has witnessed a renewed wave of violence following the June 26, 2026, killing of the state chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Ardo Risku Muhammad, and his associate, Yakubu Isah. The two were reportedly ambushed at Okudu village in Otukpo Local Government Area while returning from a peace mission in neighbouring Ohimini.

Since the incident, communities in Otukpo, Ohimini, Okpokwu and surrounding areas have reported repeated attacks allegedly involving armed herders. Residents say farmers, traders, clerics, academics, women, children and travellers have been among those affected, while some communities have been deserted and farming activities restricted because of fear of further attacks.

The worsening insecurity has also been linked to the alleged killing of former Benue Secretary to the State Government, Prof. David Salifu, who was reportedly ambushed along the Wukari-Joota Road in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area. The abduction of Rev. Dr. Samuel Gbinde, a senior pastor of the Universal Reformed Christian Church, and two members of his congregation in Guma Local Government Area further heightened concerns over the safety of residents.

On July 1, suspected armed herders reportedly attacked Sai community in Mbajir Council Ward, Katsina-Ala LGA, killing at least 10 people and injuring more than 15 others. With fresh incidents continuing, residents say the region has been transformed from a major farming hub into an area where survival and security have become daily concerns.
