PC DRAM Prices Hit Record High as AI Demand Tightens Supply
The global AI boom is driving computer memory prices to new highs, as manufacturers prioritize data-center and high-performance memory production over conventional PC DRAM.

Prices for PC DRAM memory chips reached another record high in August, highlighting the growing pressure artificial intelligence infrastructure is placing on the global semiconductor supply chain. The price of mainstream DDR4 8Gb DRAM reportedly rose by 4.17% from the previous month to around $25, setting a new all-time high. NAND flash memory prices also continued climbing as demand for AI infrastructure remained strong.
The main driver behind the increase is the enormous expansion of AI data centers. Technology companies are purchasing huge quantities of advanced memory to support AI servers, while memory manufacturers are increasingly focusing production capacity on more profitable products such as High Bandwidth Memory (HBM). This shift has reduced the amount of manufacturing capacity available for conventional DRAM used in personal computers and other consumer electronics.
The shortage is beginning to affect the wider technology market. PC manufacturers are facing higher component costs, which could eventually lead to more expensive laptops and desktop computers. HP recently reported that rising memory and commodity costs were putting pressure on its PC business margins, even as the company continued to generate strong revenue growth.
Industry forecasts suggest that the pressure may continue for some time. TrendForce previously projected major increases in conventional DRAM and NAND contract prices, while analysts expect AI infrastructure spending to keep absorbing a significant share of global memory production. New manufacturing facilities take years to build, meaning supply may struggle to catch up quickly with demand.
The situation demonstrates how the AI revolution is now affecting ordinary consumer technology. What began as a race for powerful GPUs and AI accelerators is increasingly creating shortages across the broader semiconductor ecosystem. As cloud companies and AI developers secure large amounts of memory capacity, consumers could face higher prices for PCs, smartphones and other devices that depend on DRAM and flash storage.
