We won’t allow repeat of #EndSARS protest, says IGP Egbetokun
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, has said the force will not allow a repeat of the 2020 #EndSARS protest.
The protest which started peacefully, was hijacked and eventually turned violent. Government and private investments were razed by hoodlums. Nigerian youths had trooped out en masse across the country to demand the scrapping of the notorious arm of the Nigeria Police Force, Special Anti-Robery Squad (SARS).
On August 1, youths have again vowed to protest the rising cost of living and the state of the economy. Inflation in the country currently stands at 34 percent, driving prices of food items beyond what many households van afford.
Ahead of the planned nationwide protest, Egbetokun said security agencies will under no circumstances, allow a repeat of 2020 Endsars where lives and properties were lost.
The IGP stated disclosed this at a meeting with heads of paramilitary agencies on Tuesday.
He reiterated the commitment and preparedness of the Nigeria Police Force to protect all peaceful protesters.
The meeting which is currently holding behind closed doors is being attended by heads of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC), the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the Nigeria Correctional Services (NCS), and the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC).
