How LASU Microbiology Graduate Became Lagos Real Estate Success Story

Career paths do not always follow the degrees people earn in university. Across Nigeria, many professionals have built successful careers in industries completely different from what they originally studied.
Kotun Oluwadamilola founder of Sisi Oni Dukia and Oni Dukia Limited is one of them.
Today, she is known in Lagos’ real estate sector as the founder of Sisi Oni Dukia and Oni Dukia Limited, providing services that include property sales, land transactions, shortlet management, facility management, and real estate consultancy.
But her professional journey began in a science laboratory, not at a property inspection.
Oluwadamilola earned a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from Lagos State University, a discipline far removed from the world of housing and property. Yet as her interests evolved, she recognised an opportunity to combine business, service, and problem-solving in the real estate industry.
Rather than making an abrupt career switch, she chose to strengthen her knowledge through education. She obtained a Master’s degree in Housing Development and Management from the University of Lagos before enrolling in an Executive MBA at Rome Business School, equipping herself with both technical and business expertise.
Her decision reflects a broader trend among young Nigerian professionals who are increasingly investing in new skills to remain competitive in a rapidly changing economy. As industries continue to evolve, many graduates are finding opportunities beyond the careers they initially imagined.
Oluwadamilola officially entered the real estate industry in 2021 after successfully closing her first property sale. The transaction involved a home valued at about ₦150 million, an experience she describes as the moment that confirmed she had found the right career.
Seeing the excitement of her client after receiving the keys convinced her that real estate was about more than financial transactions. It was about helping individuals and families achieve important life milestones.
Since then, she has focused on building a reputation based on professionalism, integrity, and exceptional customer service. Her efforts have earned industry recognition, including awards for Agent of the Year and Best Customer Service.
Beyond running her company, Oluwadamilola has also invested in building her personal brand, Sisi Oni Dukia. Known to many as “Your Next Door Realtor,” she uses public speaking and educational content to simplify real estate for Nigerians who may find property transactions intimidating or confusing. The slogan reflects her belief that buying or investing in property should begin with guidance from someone who feels accessible, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in a client’s success.
Her use of visual property presentations has also become part of her client-first approach, allowing prospective buyers to gain a clearer understanding of properties before making viewing appointments or investment decisions.
Nigeria’s real estate sector continues to face challenges, including rising construction costs, housing deficits, and affordability concerns. At the same time, demand for reliable professionals who can provide transparent guidance has continued to grow.
For Oluwadamilola, success has come not from following a conventional career path, but from recognising where her passion could create value.
Her journey demonstrates that while university degrees provide important foundations, careers are often shaped by curiosity, continuous learning, and the willingness to embrace new opportunities. From studying microorganisms to helping Nigerians make some of the biggest financial decisions of their lives, Oluwadamilola’s story reflects the changing nature of work and entrepreneurship in modern Nigeria.
