Former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has urged the country to jettison zoning in 2027 and rather prioritise ‘balancing.’
In an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’, Shekarau emphasised that political leaders and parties should prioritise inclusive governance and ditch “divisive strategies” like zoning.
“I always prefer to use balancing rather than zoning or rotation. There has to be some balancing. Until today, in America up to 242 years of democracy, they still have concerns about balancing,” he said.
“So, all we need to do in Nigeria is to do some balancing to carry everyone along. There should be no concern about where you are coming from. My concern is who are you?
“What we are advocating in the league is credible leadership. All the parties should come up with their planning in a situation whereby they make the best choices.
“But for Nigerians now to decide, our concern is ‘let’s look at the candidates produced by the parties’.
“Our challenge is that all the parties should give Nigerians correct candidates so we have the best to choose from. But if you give us all evils, we will choose the best from the evils.”
In October, Shekarau, who is chairman of the League of Northern Democrats (LND), said the Bola Tinubu administration has performed below average.
