The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a woman, Rabi Abubakar, over the alleged assault of her pregnant co-wife, an attack that reportedly resulted in the death of the victim’s newborn baby.

The command disclosed the arrest in a statement issued on Friday by its spokesperson, Nafiu Habib, and published on the command’s official Facebook page.

According to the statement, officers attached to the Dabe Police Outstation under the Soro Division received a report of the incident on July 22, 2026. The assault was said to have occurred five days earlier, on July 17, in Bauchi Local Government Area.

Police alleged that during a domestic disagreement, the suspect poured boiling water on her 30-year-old co-wife, inflicting severe burns while the woman was heavily pregnant.

Following the attack, the victim was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, where she was admitted for treatment.

While receiving medical care, the woman gave birth to a baby boy on July 19. However, police said the newborn suffered severe burn injuries and died the same day.

The statement added that the mother survived the incident and is currently in stable condition, responding to treatment.

Upon receiving the report, police operatives visited the scene, tracked down the suspect, and arrested her. During preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to committing the offence.

The command said the suspect remains in custody and that the case will be transferred to the Bauchi State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the alleged act and assured the public that the case would be diligently prosecuted.

He also urged residents to resolve domestic disputes peacefully and encouraged victims of domestic violence to report such incidents promptly to the police for intervention.
