Roche and Recursion Advance First AI-Discovered Brain Disease Target

Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche and AI-driven biotechnology company Recursion Pharmaceuticals have announced a major breakthrough in AI-powered drug discovery by advancing their first AI-discovered neuroscience target into an early drug discovery program. The milestone comes through Roche’s subsidiary Genentech, which exercised its first validated target option under the companies’ collaboration, marking the first time a neuroscience target identified using Recursion’s AI platform has progressed into formal drug development. The achievement provides one of the strongest real-world demonstrations yet that artificial intelligence can uncover previously unknown biological targets for difficult-to-treat diseases.
The newly advanced target is aimed at an undisclosed neurodegenerative disease, a category that includes conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Rather than focusing on well-studied biological pathways, Recursion’s AI-native platform analyzed massive datasets generated from more than one trillion cultured neurons, enabling researchers to identify previously unexplored biology that traditional research methods may have overlooked.
