GitHub Suffers Major Worldwide Outage, Disrupting Developers and AI Tools
: A widespread GitHub outage has disrupted repositories, APIs, GitHub Actions, Pull Requests and Copilot, leaving developers and software teams unable to perform critical tasks.

GitHub experienced a major worldwide outage on August 17, 2026, disrupting software development workflows across multiple regions. The Microsoft-owned platform reported elevated error rates affecting its web services and API traffic, while users experienced difficulties accessing repositories and other core features. The disruption lasted for several hours and affected developers and organizations that rely on GitHub for everyday software development.
The outage affected more than GitHub’s main website. API requests, Pull Requests, Issues, Webhooks and GitHub Actions were among the services experiencing problems, while GitHub Copilot also suffered degraded availability. Repository archive and raw-content downloads reportedly experienced error rates of around 50%, creating additional problems for developers and automated systems that depend on GitHub-hosted files.
The disruption was particularly significant because GitHub has become deeply embedded in modern software development. Teams use the platform not only to store source code but also to review changes, run automated tests, deploy applications and manage collaborative development. When GitHub Actions becomes unavailable, automated build and deployment pipelines can stall, potentially delaying software releases and other production work.
The incident also highlights the growing connection between GitHub and artificial intelligence. GitHub Copilot and other AI-assisted development tools increasingly depend on GitHub infrastructure, meaning outages can affect both human developers and AI-powered coding workflows. Recent incidents have already demonstrated how disruptions to GitHub Actions can cascade into other services, making platform reliability increasingly important as more software development becomes automated.
GitHub’s latest outage also comes after several service disruptions in recent months. GitHub’s own July availability report recorded eight incidents involving degraded performance during that month, while another significant GitHub Actions outage occurred earlier in August. The repeated disruptions are putting greater attention on the reliability of infrastructure that has become critical to the global software-development ecosystem.
