The Abia State Government has condemned the alleged killing of Chika Ibe, an indigene of Lokpaukwu in Umunneochi Local Government Area, who reportedly died after an encounter with members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Cape Town. 

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to Governor Alex Otti on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, the state described the incident as both shocking and deeply distressing. The government extended its condolences to Ibe’s family while praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.

Government Seeks Accountability

According to the statement, the Abia State Government is troubled by reports and videos circulating online that allegedly show South African police officers assaulting the deceased before his death.

The government stressed that the circumstances surrounding the incident require a transparent and impartial investigation, urging the appropriate South African authorities to ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable in accordance with the law.

Appeal to Nigerian Authorities

Governor Otti also called on the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in South Africa, to actively engage with the South African government to ensure justice is served.

The statement urged Nigerian authorities to closely monitor the investigation and provide the necessary diplomatic support to the deceased’s family throughout the process.

Concern Over Safety of Nigerians Abroad

The Abia State Government expressed concern over what it described as recurring incidents involving Nigerians living in South Africa, stressing that every citizen deserves protection regardless of where they reside.

It called for stronger cooperation between both countries to safeguard the rights and safety of Nigerians abroad while encouraging peaceful coexistence between citizens of Nigeria and South Africa.

Family Receives Government’s Sympathy

Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s solidarity with the family of Chika Ibe during what he described as a painful period, assuring them that the state would continue to follow developments surrounding the case.

The government maintained that justice must prevail and reiterated its commitment to supporting every lawful effort aimed at ensuring accountability for the alleged killing.
