China’s artificial intelligence industry has taken another major leap forward as Alibaba and DeepSeek unveiled new AI models that are raising the competitive stakes across the global technology sector. The announcements highlight China’s growing ambition to become a dominant force in AI, with both companies focusing on delivering high-performance models at significantly lower costs than many Western competitors. Investors responded positively, sending Alibaba’s shares higher following the announcement.
Alibaba introduced Qwen3.8-Max, its most advanced AI model to date. Built with a massive 2.4 trillion parameters, the model is designed to compete directly with leading systems from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google’s AI division. Using a mixture-of-experts architecture, it activates only a fraction of its parameters for each request, making it more efficient while maintaining strong performance. The model also supports multimodal capabilities, allowing it to process text, images, and video, and features a context window of up to one million tokens for handling extremely large documents.
Meanwhile, DeepSeek introduced V4-Flash, an AI model that stands out for its exceptionally low operating cost. According to benchmark data from Artificial Analysis, it is currently one of the cheapest high-performance AI models available, making advanced AI more affordable for developers and businesses. Despite its low price, V4-Flash delivers competitive performance, showing that cutting-edge AI no longer has to come with premium costs. This pricing strategy could encourage wider AI adoption while increasing pressure on established AI providers to reduce their own pricing.
The simultaneous launches underscore how rapidly China’s AI ecosystem is evolving. Rather than competing solely on performance, companies are now emphasizing affordability, open-weight models, and developer accessibility.
