A 32-year-old dispatch rider, Emmanuel Jegede, has died after he was allegedly attacked by suspected hoodlums who attempted to extort him along the Ikotun-Idimu Road in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State. The incident has renewed concerns over the activities of street gangs accused of harassing motorists and commercial operators in parts of the state. 

According to eyewitness accounts, the tragedy occurred when Jegede was riding his motorcycle through the Alhaja area of Ikotun-Idimu Road. Two suspected hoodlums, said to be notorious for demanding money from road users around the junction, allegedly tried to stop him. When the dispatch rider refused to comply, they reportedly shoved him while his motorcycle was still in motion.

The force of the push caused the rider to lose control of the motorcycle before crashing into the road median. Residents and passers-by rushed to the scene in an effort to rescue him, but he was pronounced dead before medical assistance could arrive. The suspects fled immediately after the incident.

The killing has sparked outrage among residents and members of the dispatch riders’ community, many of whom say extortion by street miscreants has become a persistent threat in several parts of Lagos. Riders and motorists have repeatedly complained about groups that unlawfully demand money at busy intersections, with those who refuse sometimes facing intimidation or violence.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said detectives had commenced an investigation into the case. She disclosed that efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.

The police appealed to members of the public with useful information to assist investigators, assuring residents that everyone connected with the killing would be brought to justice. Patrols have also been intensified around the area as part of measures to curb criminal activities and reassure commuters.

Security experts say the latest incident underscores the need for sustained enforcement against street gangs and illegal extortion rings operating in parts of Lagos. They urged residents to promptly report suspicious activities while calling on authorities to strengthen surveillance in known black spots to prevent similar attacks.

The death of Emmanuel Jegede has added to growing calls for tougher action against hoodlums who prey on innocent road users. As investigations continue, family members, colleagues and residents are hoping those responsible will be apprehended and prosecuted.
