The family of Ibrahim Mbaya, the 25-year-old University of Jos graduate who was allegedly beaten to death by a mob in Plateau State, is set to bury him today in his hometown of Hawul Local Government Area, Borno State, as relatives continue to demand justice over the tragic killing.

Mbaya’s younger brother, James Mbaya, disclosed that arrangements had been completed to transport his remains from Jos to Borno for burial. He described the family’s loss as devastating, saying the death of the young graduate had left their parents heartbroken.

According to James, Ibrahim was the family’s first child and first son, a position that carried enormous expectations. He said the family had looked forward to seeing him build a successful future after graduating from the University of Jos.

“Our parents have been shattered by this tragedy,” James said. “He had so many dreams that were never fulfilled. We are deeply saddened, but we hope justice will be served.”

The incident has continued to attract widespread condemnation across the country since it occurred at an off-campus apartment behind the City of David area along Ring Road in Jos. Reports indicate that Mbaya was allegedly attacked and beaten by a mob over a missing iPhone 12, leading to injuries that claimed his life.

Family members have insisted that everyone connected with the killing should be identified and prosecuted. James described the manner of his brother’s death as cruel and inhumane, saying no family should have to endure such an experience.

He also reflected on Ibrahim’s ambitions, describing him as a model, dancer and entrepreneur who had planned to establish a fashion business and a restaurant before his life was cut short.

The Plateau State Police Command has already confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with the alleged culpable homicide. The suspects, identified as Rinji Daniel Fwanji, Emmanuel Newyear and Nensemka Fwanji, are currently assisting investigators as the police continue their probe into the circumstances surrounding the killing.

The University of Jos has also expressed sadness over the death of its graduate. In a statement issued by the institution, the management extended condolences to Mbaya’s family, classmates and the Department of Political Science, urging students to remain calm while security agencies complete their investigation.

The killing has sparked renewed public concern over mob justice and the dangers of taking the law into private hands. Human rights advocates and community leaders have urged Nigerians to allow security agencies to investigate criminal allegations rather than resorting to violence.

As Ibrahim Mbaya is laid to rest today, attention remains on the ongoing police investigation. His family says although nothing can reverse their loss, they hope the prosecution of those responsible will provide some measure of justice and help prevent similar incidents in the future.
