The incident occurred on Wednesday when the assailants reportedly invaded the bishop’s residence in the Asa III area of Otukpo, sparking fresh concerns over insecurity in the state. The Catholic Diocese confirmed the attack on Friday and appealed for prayers for the safe return of the victim.

In a statement issued by the Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo, Rev. Fr. Joseph Aboyi Itodo, the church said the attackers forcefully entered the premises and took the seminarian away. The diocesan leadership, led by Most Rev. Michael Apochi, described the incident as distressing and urged members of the faithful and the general public to remain calm while praying for Ochai’s safe release.

The attack adds to the growing wave of kidnappings and violent assaults targeting communities and religious institutions in parts of Benue State. Security challenges, including abductions for ransom and armed attacks, have continued to affect several local government areas, prompting repeated calls for stronger security measures to protect residents and vulnerable institutions.

However, the Benue State Police Command has offered a different account of the incident. Police authorities said they are currently treating the matter as a missing person case rather than a confirmed abduction. According to the command, investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the seminarian’s disappearance, even as the Catholic Diocese insists he was taken away by armed men during the attack.

The conflicting accounts have intensified public concern as security agencies continue efforts to establish the facts behind the incident. Church leaders have called for swift action to locate the seminarian and ensure his safe return, while residents hope ongoing investigations will provide clarity and lead to those responsible being brought to justice.
