The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has thwarted two international drug trafficking attempts after operatives intercepted cocaine concealed inside a traditional wooden mortar destined for China and another shipment hidden in the false bottom of a backpack bound for Italy. The seizures were made by officers of the agency’s Directorate of Operations and General Investigations (DOGI) during intelligence-led operations in Lagos.

According to the NDLEA, officers recovered 250 grams of cocaine hidden in the base of a wooden mortar prepared for export to China, while another 500 grams of the illicit drug was discovered inside a specially modified backpack concealed among lace materials destined for Italy. The agency said the interceptions highlight the increasingly sophisticated tactics adopted by international drug trafficking networks.

NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi urged Nigerians to be cautious when accepting parcels for delivery on behalf of others, warning that possession of illegal substances carries serious legal consequences regardless of ownership. He noted that traffickers are continually devising new concealment methods, making public vigilance an important part of efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening surveillance at logistics companies, airports and other export channels to prevent narcotics from leaving the country. It also assured the public that intelligence-driven operations would continue as part of its broader campaign to dismantle drug trafficking networks and protect Nigeria’s international reputation.
