Ogun Community Tense After Police Allegedly Shoot Oro Festival Celebrant Dead

Youths protest, torch police stations as authorities arrest officers involved in the shooting

Tension has gripped Ifonyintedo community in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State following the alleged shooting of a young man, identified as Owolabi Oniyiku, by police officers at a checkpoint. Oniyiku, who had reportedly returned to the community to celebrate the Oro festival with family and friends, was allegedly shot in the chest on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.

According to reports, Oniyiku was taking a friend to Ilashe Garage when they encountered a police roadblock reportedly mounted after a checkpoint was attacked and set ablaze the previous night. He allegedly stopped to plead with officers to release a motorcycle that had been seized from one of his friends, but an argument reportedly followed, during which an officer allegedly shot him.

The killing triggered protests by youths, who reportedly took Oniyiku’s body to the Idiroko Area Command and later set fire to police facilities in the community. The development has heightened concerns among residents, with community groups alleging harassment and extortion at checkpoints in the area.

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident and said the officers allegedly involved in the shooting had been arrested while an investigation is ongoing. The National Youth Council of Nigeria in Ipokia has called for an independent investigation, accountability and a review of checkpoints in the area, while urging residents to remain calm and seek justice through lawful channels.
