OpenAI Pledges Zero Data Retention for Frontier AI Models

OpenAI is testing a new privacy system that allows business customers to use its most advanced AI models while keeping their data out of OpenAI’s retained storage.

OpenAI is introducing Private Safety Processing, a new system designed to address a growing concern among businesses: how to use increasingly powerful AI without giving up control over sensitive company information. The company says it will continue offering Zero Data Retention (ZDR) for frontier models, meaning eligible customers can have prompts and model responses processed without OpenAI retaining them after processing.

The challenge is that more advanced AI systems can perform longer and more autonomous tasks, making safety monitoring more complicated. A potentially harmful pattern may only become apparent when several interactions are considered together. OpenAI says Private Safety Processing is designed to detect these patterns while maintaining the customer’s data-retention protections.

Under the new approach, customer content can remain on infrastructure controlled by the customer or be stored using encryption keys controlled by the customer. Automated safety systems can then look for patterns associated with misuse without requiring OpenAI employees to directly access the customer’s content. OpenAI says the system is currently being tested with early customers, with a broader rollout and technical documentation planned for September.

The announcement also has a competitive dimension. Anthropic recently introduced a 30-day retention requirement for some enterprise customers using its most capable models, arguing that retaining logs is necessary to identify sophisticated, multi-step misuse. OpenAI’s approach attempts to offer similar safety monitoring while maintaining zero-retention protections, potentially making its services more attractive to companies handling sensitive information.

The development highlights a major challenge for enterprise AI: companies want increasingly capable models, but they also need strong guarantees around privacy, intellectual property and regulatory compliance. If OpenAI can demonstrate that Private Safety Processing reliably identifies dangerous activity without retaining customer data, it could strengthen the company’s position among businesses that have been cautious about putting sensitive information into AI systems.
