OpenAI’s Codex Surpasses 20 Million Users
OpenAI’s AI coding and productivity agent has passed 20 million active users, highlighting the rapid shift from conversational AI toward systems capable of completing complex tasks.

OpenAI’s Codex has surpassed 20 million active users, marking a major increase in adoption for the company’s AI agent. The milestone comes only weeks after Codex and ChatGPT Work were reported to have reached 10 million users, showing how quickly demand for agentic AI has accelerated.
Codex began primarily as an AI coding assistant, but its role has expanded significantly. OpenAI says more than 5 million people were already using Codex every week by June, with non-developers—including researchers, analysts, marketers, designers and other professionals—representing about 20% of users and growing faster than developers.
The rapid growth reflects a broader change in how people use AI. Instead of simply asking a chatbot questions, users can delegate longer tasks to an agent that can work with files, tools and software environments. OpenAI reported that by May, more than 70% of sampled Codex users had made at least one request estimated to represent more than an hour of human work.
Enterprise adoption is also expanding beyond traditional software engineering. OpenAI reports that weekly enterprise Codex usage has grown dramatically in areas including legal, sales, recruiting and marketing. This suggests that AI agents are increasingly being treated as productivity tools capable of carrying out portions of knowledge-work workflows rather than simply providing assistance.
The 20-million-user milestone therefore represents more than growth for a single OpenAI product. It signals a broader transition toward agentic AI, where users delegate multi-step work to AI systems and supervise the results. If adoption continues at this pace, competition between AI companies may increasingly depend on which systems can reliably complete useful real-world tasks—not simply which chatbot produces the best answers.
