Optical-Fiber Stocks Surge as AI Data Centers Drive Demand
Investors are increasingly turning their attention from AI chips to the optical infrastructure needed to connect massive data centers, pushing shares of companies across the fiber and photonics industry higher.

The rapid expansion of artificial-intelligence data centers is creating a powerful new source of demand for optical fiber, lasers, transceivers and high-speed networking equipment. As AI clusters become larger, enormous volumes of data must move between GPUs, servers and storage systems at increasingly high speeds. That is making optical connectivity a critical part of the AI infrastructure buildout.
Companies such as Lumentum, Corning, Coherent, Ciena and Applied Optoelectronics have benefited from growing investor interest in the optical-networking sector. Lumentum’s recent results were particularly important, with its revenue growth highlighting the strength of demand for optical components used in AI data centers. The strong performance helped trigger a broader rally across related companies.
The scale of the infrastructure required is enormous. Corning has reported strong growth in its Optical Communications business, with sales increasing 32% year over year, helped by AI data-center and scale-out infrastructure demand. The company has also secured multiyear agreements with major technology companies, demonstrating how hyperscalers are committing significant resources to optical connectivity.
Another important factor is the growing demand for higher-speed optical technologies. AI workloads require faster connections between computing systems, increasing the need for advanced optical transceivers and laser components. Indium phosphide, for example, is an important material used in lasers that convert electrical signals into optical signals, and analysts have warned that rapidly increasing AI demand could create supply pressures for the material.
The broader investment story is that the AI boom is expanding beyond GPUs. As companies such as Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon, Google and Meta build increasingly powerful computing infrastructure, the supporting network must also scale. Optical technology could therefore become one of the next major bottlenecks in AI infrastructure, creating opportunities for suppliers while also exposing them to risks such as supply constraints, high valuations and changes in hyperscaler spending.
