Sokoto Police Kill Two Suspected Bandits, Arrest Others

Two AK-47 rifles, ammunition and nine stolen motorcycles recovered in separate operations

The Sokoto State Police Command has reported the killing of two suspected bandits and the arrest of several other suspects during separate operations across the state. Police spokesperson DSP Ahmad Rufa’i said the operations also led to the recovery of firearms, ammunition and suspected stolen motorcycles.

According to the command, the first operation took place on August 15, 2026, after police received a distress call about armed bandits moving from Tsauana Forest towards Dankadu Village in Illela Local Government Area. Tactical teams engaged the suspects in a gun battle, forcing them to retreat into the forest. A subsequent search recovered two AK-47 rifles, two magazines and 54 rounds of live ammunition, while two suspected bandits were killed. No security personnel or civilians were injured.

In a separate operation in Kwannawa and Tamaje areas of Sokoto metropolis, police arrested three suspects and recovered five suspected stolen motorcycles and a locally fabricated pistol. Further investigations into motorcycle theft also led to additional arrests, with police saying nine stolen motorcycles have so far been recovered in connection with the case.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Hassan Hayatu Shaffa, commended the operatives and assured residents that investigations would continue. He urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, while warning people against knowingly purchasing stolen motorcycles, as they could face legal consequences.
