Spotify is introducing a new “AI Persona” label to help listeners distinguish between human artists and artist identities created with artificial intelligence. The new badge is expected to begin appearing in mid-September 2026, with labels shown on artist profiles, search results and alongside songs in playlists. Spotify says the initiative is designed to strengthen transparency and trust as AI-generated music becomes increasingly common.
The new system will allow artists to voluntarily disclose that their public identity is AI-generated through Spotify for Artists. Spotify will also use human reviewers and AI-powered tools to identify profiles that may represent artificial personas. Profiles that meet certain criteria could receive a “Likely AI Persona” designation, while artists will have an opportunity to provide information or appeal the decision.
One of the biggest changes is how Spotify will handle recommendations. Music connected to profiles carrying the AI Persona label will generally be excluded from personalized and editorial recommendations by default. However, the music will remain available when listeners deliberately search for it or follow the artist. This means Spotify is not banning AI personas from the platform, but it is changing how prominently its recommendation systems distribute them.
Importantly, Spotify’s new AI Persona system is focused primarily on the artist’s identity, rather than automatically determining whether individual songs were created using AI. The company already has an AI disclosure system that can provide information about how AI was used in a track, including AI-generated vocals, instruments or production. Spotify says these disclosures are intended to give listeners more context without automatically penalizing artists for responsible AI use.
The announcement comes as AI-generated music continues to expand across streaming platforms, creating new challenges around authenticity, impersonation, spam and artist rights. Spotify says it removed 75 million spam tracks during the previous year, highlighting the scale of the problem. The new labeling system represents another attempt to separate legitimate creative experimentation with AI from misleading artist identities and low-quality automated content.
